How to Conduct an Interview on Facebook Live

by | Mar 14, 2018 | Digital Tips, Facebook, Facebook Live, Interviews, Social Media Tips

The reason why Facebook Live Interviews are a key part of any business strategy on Facebook – particularly after the Facebookmageddon of 11th January 2018 – is because people spend more time watching Facebook Live videos than videos that aren’t live. Three times more!

At the moment

Next year, this may no longer be the hottest strategy online.

But we will deal with next year … next year.

To host a live interview on Facebook Live, please study these instructions several times, then:

  1. Mobile: Both parties should use mobile phones and chose a filter you are comfortable with.
  2. Set Privacy Settings: Go live  ‘only me’ or ‘specific friends’ to trial it out then set Privacy Settings to Public when you are ready to go live … It all makes more sense when you start playing around with the interface.
  3. Host – log in as “Your Company Page” rather than your personal profile
  4. Get Set Up: Tell Guest to ‘Like’ page and ‘join’ your Facebook Group
  5. Go to the Facebook Page or Group
  6. Strong wifi: Go closer to the router
  7. Horizontal You: Make sure YOU set up in horizontal.
  8. Horizontal Guest: Make sure guest joins you in horizontal.
  9. Phone Rotation Lock Off: When your guest can not join/accept your invite and can’t join the broadcast, ask them to turn the rotation lock off. Once the phone can rotate freely, tell them to hold their phone horizontal (in landscape mode) and try to send the invite again.
  10. Privately test before going live. The default is set to public so click on ‘Specific Friends’
  11. Title: Give a captivating title with a keyword.
  12. Location: Add location
  13. Feeling: Add emoji
  14. No Comment. Sometimes the ability for you to send the invite isn’t available because your guest didn’t comment on the Live broadcast. FIX: Ask them to comment ‘I am here’. You should now be able to send the invite for them to join your broadcast.
  15. Go! Press ‘Go Live”

Intro

  1. Set your timer: Spend about 5 minutes welcoming people into the the ‘Company Name’ Live show.
  2. Interact Words: Welcome people by name as they come in. Ask people where they are watching from. Get them to “write the town you’re in, in the comments”. Read them out as you see them come up. Say “hi” to Jennifer from Maidenhead and Bertoldh from Vienna. Welcome them warmly to the live Edinburgh ‘Company Name’ live event.
  3. Interact Emojis: Tell them to hit the emojis to let you know how you’re doing. The more emojis that are hit during the live interview, the more your mood lifts. Unless of course they hit the negative emojis.
  4. Interact Invites: Tell people to invite their friends to the discussion if they might be interested in the topic of …
  5. Interact Notifications: Tell people to click ‘Yes’ for future notifications of when you go live.

5 Minutes Should have elapsed while you do all the welcomes.

Body of the Interview

Now get straight to the interview.

  1. Intro 3 – 5 mins
  2. Main interview 5 – 7 mins (absolutely no more than 9 minutes – please practise)
  3. Sign off: 2 mins

Reminder Who: Remind people – who you and what they are going to discover – every four minutes throughout the Live. – Get a friend or assistance to set her timer then wave a paper saying “Who are you?” every four minutes. Reason? People join in at different times so it’s good practise to remind everyone what it’s all about.

Reminder Engage: Remind folk to click the reaction emojis and invite friends. To let you know if they are loving it, laughing, liking, sad, angry, or put comments and questions in the box below.

  1. Host Q&A: Get feedback on your performance and generate content quickly, based on what viewers want to know. If you’re looking to increase engagement with your audience, provide an in-depth look at your event / exhibition / talks, and gain more exposure and awareness.
  2. Teach Viewers How to Do Something: The first rule in creating content for your audience is to provide value in everything you do. One of the easiest ways to do this is to teach your audience how to do something. This can be easy if the instruction is on a task you already know very well.
  3. Make An Announcement: Breaking news / new artists / new funding / new sponsorship / new partnerships / news in the sector / new interviews
  4. Who Are You Really? What Inspired You To Start This? What was the Moment You Knew This Was What You Were Going to Do? Give us more insight into your WHY.
  5. Live Critiques and Tear Downs: Ask audience to submit work for review. Diagnose a problem.
  6. Host a Special Guest: Select a massive personality from the sector and ask them for a live interview for your community. Give them an opportunity to promote their latest product / service in return to your audience.
  7. Run a Contest: Announce the winners live. Show the selection process. The contenders. Ask folks for their views of each contender / work / submission. Drum roll the results …
  8. Behind the Scenes: Draw back the curtain on the preparations pre-launch. Do a time-lapse of the exhibition-build. Show knackered team ordering pizza and beer after a long day’s prep
  9. Live Live Events: Go live when you go live. Party. Launch. Tour. Talks. All can be ‘lived’ then retained for posterity (and the promo video for the next event).
  10. Live Tour: Give a live tour of the venues and why you have chosen them. Speak to the manager about the history of the building. Find keyword clues and treasure in everything
  11. Collabs: Hook up with other hosts in a related space and cross-fertilise your audiences
  12. Have the time of your life … or else!
