Childhood and Social Media Interview on BBC

by | Jul 9, 2019 | Marketing | 0 comments

I was on BBC Radio Scotland’s Good Morning Scotland Show this morning, talking about the alleged adverse effects of social media on young people.

A report from @actionforchildren states 2/3rds of parents think childhoods are getting worse. All said bullying was the main problem, followed by pressure to fit in, which has intensified in the age of social media.

However a comprehensive report from Oxford University this year canvassed children and young people themselves and discovered that 99.75% of a young person’s life satisfaction has nothing to do with social media.

As a mum of 5 and a social media professional, it’s important for parents to understand that fresh air, lots of exercise, music, dance and cultural experiences, plus socialising with mates and family along with academics and reading need to be at top of the list of childhood DAILY activities. Especially during the summer holidays.

Once that’s done, they can spend all the time they want on social media catching up with mates, learning good social skills and using the tools to enhance their lives.

Social media tends to be a magnifier for individuals, children and businesses. If the underlying fundamentals are in place, it is a place for doing good.

Discuss!
